Community Opportunities: March 2023

Support groups can give survivors and caregivers a sense of community and identity.

In addition to the programs provided by Brain Injury Services for our clients and caregivers, below are groups and programs available in the community. The programs below are not hosted by Brain Injury Services.  Please verify the information and/or RSVP by calling or emailing with the provided information.

Health & Wellness Fair
Tuesday, March 14
12 – 5 PM
University of Mary Washington
An afternoon of health and wellness with vendors from the Fredericksburg area. There will be freebies, prize drawings, demonstrations, and more! Spread the word; it’s for the entire Fredericksburg community!

M.E.N.T.O.R. Mindfulness, Exercise, and Nutrition, To Optimize Resilience
8-week virtual wellness program
MENTOR (Mindfulness, Exercise, and Nutrition, To Optimize Resilience) is an evidence-based 8-week virtual wellness program for people with disabilities.  Sportable is offering this program for FREE to Virginians with TBI.

CLiC Forward
Mondays & Wednesdays March 6 – May 24
10 AM – 12:30 PM
A free, online group focusing on long-term wellness.  This round will feature Tai Chi, art instruction, and a discussion group.  All materials will be provided to participants at no cost. *Referrals can be completed by visiting:  https://forms.office.com/r/DqNB6tF9n9 ; please select “CLiC Forward.” Please email your case manager or stacey@bisswva.org for help completing the referral.
Speaking on Purpose
First and Third Wednesday
12 PM
Many people join Toastmasters to become better speakers. Speaking on Purpose is a supportive online community for those with physical and neurological impairments, such as brain injury, to come together, practice speaking, learn new skills, and have fun along the way!

Living With Brain Injury Support Group
Every Friday
10 AM – 12 PM
The Living with Brain Injury group is a unique and supportive community of individuals recovering from brain injury. This support group is intended to improve our recovery experience through respectful sharing and connective experiences.

The Helping Hands Stroke Club
Every Friday
1 – 2 PM
Meeting topics vary and include open discussions, guest speakers, fitness demonstrations, cooking classes, potlucks, health expos, game days, and creative therapies such as art and music therapy.  There is also a speech therapy group, and a caregiver’s group meets twice a month.  All groups meet at the Joseph Willard Health Center.

Fredericksburg Stroke Support Group
Tuesday, March 7
6:30 – 8 PM
Free monthly support group for stroke survivors and caregivers. Attend in person at the John Fick Conference Center, 1301 Sam Perry Blvd, Fredericksburg, VA, or to attend via Zoom, contact Susan for the virtual link.  Meets the first Tuesday of the month.

Inova Fairfax Stroke Survivors and Caregivers Support Group

7 – 8:30 PM
Share your story and help others. Learn about reducing the risk for stroke and find community services available to you. Meets the first Tuesday of the month. Caregivers welcome.

Caregiver Virtual Meeting

Brain Injury Association of Virginia offers caregivers a safe place to receive support and strength and share their experiences with others. Every first Wednesday of the month.

Trauma Survivors Network
TBI Group

Tuesday, March 14
12 – 1:30 PM
The Trauma Survivors Network (TSN) TBI Support group is a monthly support group for survivors and caregivers offering attendees support, coping skills, and education. Meets on the second Tuesday of every month at Fairfax Hospital.
* A minimum of 4 people is needed to meet. *

CLiC Care Virtual Support Group Tuesday, March 14

CLiC Care is a monthly online support group for brain injury survivors, caregivers, and families. Meets on the second Tuesday of the month.

A free, online social group for adult brain injury survivors across Virginia offered by Brain Injury Services of Southwest Virginia.

Stroke & Brain Injury Support Group Thursday, March 16
4 – 5 PM
A virtual support group to share personal experiences, listen to others with a history of stroke/brain injury, and learn new research and information.  Meets the third Thursday of the month.

Virtual Support Group Tuesday, March 28
6:00 PM
Brain Injury Association of Virginia offers a group for people living with brain injury, their families, and friends. The group is a safe place to explore the challenges of brain injury and exchange ideas and information with others who really “get it.” Meets the fourth Tuesday of the month.
