Want to spread some positivity in your life? Create a benevolent bucket list. Think of it as a “Kind Acts” list where you write down things to do to spread happiness and positivity in others’ lives. Focus on how to benefit your personal community and acts of kindness that can be anonymous. Here are just a few items that should definitely be on your bucket list of benevolence:

  • Leave flowers on a stranger’s doorstep
  • Leave $5 in a book at a bookstore
  • Start a gratitude journal
  • Donate to a nonprofit
  • Volunteer for a community event
  • Run a charity 5K
  • Pay for coffee for a stranger
  • Make a mixed CD for a friend

Why Being Selfish Actually Makes You Altruistic

Selfish has garnered a bad connotation in modern society— it can mean evil, greedy, narcissistic, egoistic and mean. So why would being selfish make you altruistic? Because there’s a difference between being self-focused and self-involved. Scheduling “me time” for the key factors below will make you more altruistic in your life.

You’ll be healthier—Strong physical health is essential for being altruistic because it encourages dopamine, a neurotransmitter which makes you happier. But, being healthy means being selfish. You need to take time for yourself to exercise, plan meals and cook them.

You’ll be happier—By being selfish with your time, you develop a better sense of who you are and become more self-aware. This breeds authenticity and positivity within yourself which makes you happier.

You’ll have better relationships—Being selfish in a relationship essential means setting boundaries and prioritizing. This becomes helpful when figuring out what you need in a lifelong partner: look for a partner that fills your needs (and vice versa) and you two will enjoy each other.

What is Humanitarianism?

World Humanitarian Day is August 19, and it is “a time to recognize those who face danger and adversity in order to help others,” as described by the United Nations. To explain it in plain terms, World Humanitarian Day is dedicated to those who spend their lives making other people’s lives better, and they, themselves, suffer. But you may be asking: what is humanitarianism? Humanitarianism is a moral of kindness, benevolence, and sympathy extended to all human beings. If you’re looking to give back to your fellow human beings, try these things to add more humanitarianism to the world:

Help the homeless—Homelessness is a nationwide epidemic and no one quite knows how to find a solution. But, you can do your part by visiting a homeless shelter. Help prepare food, make blankets or donate children’s games to the shelter. Maybe you can teach someone a particular skill they can use in the workforce. There’s always some way you can contribute.

Visit the elderly—Care for human beings by visiting the elderly. Many nursing homes and older hospital patients are suffering from familial problems and illnesses. Many of them just want to “tell their story” before they pass on. Sit down and make an elderly person feel loved and cared for by listening to them.

Stand up to bullying—A simple gesture can set off a lifelong change. Stand up and defend a victim of bullying in your community. It could be at school, at work or even on the street. If you hear someone say something hateful to another person, then defend the victim and spread kindness.

How to Throw a Fundraiser Birthday Party

If you’re one of those people who dislikes their own birthday because it’s too much attention, then a fundraiser birthday party is for you. Basically, you use your birthday as an excuse to raise awareness and money for a cause you are passionate about. You could limit the invite list to your friend and family, or you could open it up to co-workers, community volunteers and even more. Here are your three tips to throwing yourself a fundraiser birthday party:

Digitally fundraise—For those family members and friends who feel uncomfortable sending money in the mail, set up an account on a fundraising website for people to donate online. You could set it up through Razoo, Punchbowl or even create a landing page on the nonprofit’s website that is solely focused on your fundraiser birthday party.

Showcase nonprofit—The most important part of your fundraiser birthday party is educating your guests on the particular cause. Take it a step further and host your birthday party at the nonprofit’s offices, and, of course, invite all the nonprofit employees and volunteers to your party.

Serve themed-food—Think about the cause that you’re fundraising for. How can you lend the cause to a birthday party theme? Maybe you’re fundraising for animal rights, so you have everything animal-themed and serve animal crackers. Think along those lines to make it more fun.

October 10 is World Mental Health Day

Mental health is finally making its way to the forefront of society. For years, it was taboo to even talk about mental health, and now, we’re becoming more aware of how we can promote it in our communities and within ourselves. When we confront the topic and educate people, we decrease suicides and other harmful events. But first, it is imperative to educate yourself. Take time on October 10 to research more about mental health. For now, here are three ways to promote it within your community:

Suicide prevention fundraiser—If you are passionate about mental health but not sure how to express it, try organizing a fundraiser. You can hand out suicide prevention pamphlets and provide access and knowledge to confidential providers.

Talk about mental health—The most important way to promote mental health is to talk about it and erase the stigma. Talk about treatment, symptoms and the harmful effects of not treating depression or other mental health diseases.

Be understanding—One in five people have been affected by depression in their lifetime. Be a loyal friend, even through the tough times, and help your friends and families who may be suffering from depression.
