Community Opportunities: June 2023

Support groups can give survivors and caregivers a sense of community and identity.

In addition to the programs provided by Brain Injury Services for our clients and caregivers, below are groups and programs available in the community. Brain Injury Services does not host the programs below.  Please verify the information and/or RSVP by calling or emailing with the provided information.

A new group is forming to reduce isolation, improve mental health and help family caregivers have social outings from time to time. We would love to meet you and start building our little community of supportive and understanding fellow family caregivers of all ages and backgrounds.  Bring yourself and some money to cover any purchases you make at the cafe.
Love Your Brain Retreats

Love Your Brain hosts 5-day holistic health Retreat programs. Experience the science-backed benefits of our mindfulness, movement, nutrition, art, and community-building curriculum. Explore what it means to love your brain in a co-created space of vulnerability, trust, and belonging.

First Responder & Safety Resource Fair

Years of data tell us that people with disabilities are more likely to encounter law enforcement than typically developing peers and more likely to struggle to navigate that interaction. Join The Arc of Northern Virginia for a resource fair and practice event with Fairfax County responders and community partners.
Front Royal Stroke Support Group Monday, June 5
4:30 – 6 PM

Speaking on Purpose First and Third Wednesday
12 PM
Many people join Toastmasters to become better speakers. Speaking on Purpose is a supportive online community for those with physical and neurological impairments, such as brain injury, to come together, practice speaking, learn new skills, and have fun!
Living With Brain Injury Support Group Every Friday
10 AM – 12 PM
The Living with Brain Injury group is a unique and supportive community of individuals recovering from brain injury. This support group is intended to improve our recovery experience through respectful sharing and connective experiences.

The Helping Hands Stroke Club
Every Friday
1 – 2 PM
Meeting topics vary and include open discussions, guest speakers, fitness demonstrations, cooking classes, potlucks, health expos, game days, and creative therapies such as art and music therapy. There is also a speech therapy group that meets twice a month and a caregiver’s group. All groups meet at the Joseph Willard Health Center.
Fredericksburg Stroke Support Group Tuesday, June 6
6:30 – 8 PM
Free monthly support group for stroke survivors and caregivers. Attend in person at the John Fick Conference Center, 1301 Sam Perry Blvd, Fredericksburg, VA, or to attend via Zoom, contact Susan for the virtual link. Meets the first Tuesday of the month.

Inova Fairfax Stroke Survivors and Caregivers Support Group

Trauma Survivors Network
TBI Group
Tuesday, June 13

The Trauma Survivors Network (TSN) TBI Support group is a monthly support group for survivors and caregivers offering attendees support, coping skills, and education. Meets on the second Tuesday of every month at Fairfax Hospital.

CLiC Care Tuesday, June 13

A free online support group across Virginia for brain injury survivors, caregivers, and loved ones. Meetings occur on the second Tuesday of each month from 7 – 8:30 p.

Stroke & Brain Injury Support Group Thursday, June 15
4 – 5 PM
A virtual support group to share personal experiences, listen to others with a history of stroke/brain injury, and learn about new research and information. Meets the third Thursday of the month.

Virtual Support Group Tuesday, June 22
6:00 PM
Brain Injury Association of Virginia offers a group for people living with brain injury, their families, and friends. The group is a safe place to explore the challenges of brain injury and exchange ideas and information with others who really “get it.” Meets the fourth Tuesday of the month.

CLiC Forward Sound Healing
July 8 – Aug 5
10:30 – 11:30 AM
A free, online group focusing on long-term wellness.  Sound healing uses sound waves to facilitate a “downshift” from our waking state to a calmer state.  Sound baths enable the participant to enter a meditative and restful state where internal healing may be facilitated more deeply. Sessions may incorporate mindfulness, sound baths (crystal and Tibetan bowls, gong, chimes, flute, harp, and more), and voice.  Open to adult BI survivors and caregivers across the state of VA
