Community Opportunities: August 2023

Support groups can give survivors and caregivers a sense of community and identity.

In addition to the programs provided by Brain Injury Services for our clients and caregivers, below are groups and programs available in the community. Brain Injury Services does not host the programs below.  Please verify the information and/or RSVP by calling or emailing with the provided information.

Trauma Survivors Network TBI Group
Tuesday, September 12
12 – 1:30 PM
The Trauma Survivors Network (TSN) TBI Support group is a monthly support group for survivors and caregivers offering attendees support, coping skills, and education. Meetings are on the second Tuesday of every month at Fairfax Hospital.
* A minimum of 4 people is needed to meet. *

Inova Fairfax Stroke Survivors and Caregivers Support Group
Tuesday, September 5
7 – 8:30 PM
Share your story and help others. Learn about reducing the risk for stroke and find community services available to you. Meetings are on the first Tuesday of the month. Caregivers welcome.

Virtual Meeting

Brain Injury Association of Virginia offers caregivers a safe place to receive support and strength and share their experiences with others. Meetings are on the first Wednesday of the month.

Front Royal Stroke Support Group

Meetings are in the Front Royal, VA area. Locations will be determined based on activity.

Fredericksburg Stroke Support Group

6:30 – 8 PM
Free monthly support group for stroke survivors and caregivers.
In person at the John Fick Conference Center, 1301 Sam Perry Blvd, Fredericksburg.

CLiC Care: Casie Martinez, Horticulture Therapy

A free online support group across Virginia for brain injury survivors, caregivers, and loved ones. Meetings are on the second Tuesday of each month from 7 – 8:30 PM.

VHC Health Stroke Survivor’s Group
Wednesday, September 13
5:30 – 7 PM
1701 N. George Mason Dr, Arlington
Attend in-person or virtually.
We encourage you to join us in navigating this journey alongside others facing similar experiences.  Our group provides friendship, education, and information on resources.  Meetings are on the second Wednesday of every month.   Please email strokesurvivors@vhchealth.org for more information, including monthly topics and access to virtual options.

Stroke & Brain Injury Support Group

Brain Injury Association of Virginia offers a group for people living with brain injury, their families, and friends. The group is a safe place to explore the challenges of brain injury and exchange ideas and information with others who really “get it.” Meets the fourth Tuesday of the month.

Speaking on Purpose
First and Third Wednesday
12 PM
Many people join Toastmasters to become better speakers. Speaking on Purpose is a supportive online community for those with physical and neurological impairments, such as brain injury, to come together, practice speaking, learn new skills, and have fun!

Living With Brain Injury Support Group
Every Friday
10 AM – 12 PM
The Living with Brain Injury group is a unique and supportive community of individuals recovering from brain injury. This support group is intended to improve our recovery experience through respectful sharing and connective experiences.

The Helping Hands Stroke Club
Every Friday
1 – 2 PM
Meeting topics vary and include open discussions, guest speakers, fitness demonstrations, cooking classes, potlucks, health expos, game days, and creative therapies such as art and music therapy. There is also a speech therapy group that meets twice a month and a caregiver’s group. All groups meet at the Joseph Willard Health Center.

Love Your Brain Mindset
Free online yoga, mindfulness & education to build resilience for the brain injury community. Choose between two types of six-week programs to connect with the TBI community. You’ll also receive weekly tools: a brief video, yoga class, meditation, and yoga nidra. You must have Zoom, reliable internet, and a device with audio/webcam.

CLiC Foundation
September 2023, dates & times to be announced.
A cognitive compensatory curriculum designed to improve day-to-day life; focuses on memory, planning, executive function, and improving social connections.
