Brain Injury Services hosts annual reception to recognizes partners, clients, and volunteers.
(SPRINGFIELD, VA March 5th, 2020) — On March 18th, Brain Injury Services is hosting its 17th annual reception to recognize community partners and volunteers who support the mission of empowering those impacted by brain injury throughout the year. The reception will be at the Waterford in Springfield, VA at 6:00 pm.
Ms. Ellen Bryan, Co-Host of Great Day Washington and multimedia journalist for WUSA9 will be the evening’s Emcee. Entertainment will be provided by Singer/Songwriter Wim Tapley.
“I am thrilled to be emceeing the Brain Injury Services’ Annual Reception because it is so important to recognize the work people do every day that can go unnoticed,” said Bryan. “My sister suffered a brain injury 20 years ago that changed her life and our family’s life forever. “This will be a wonderful event to come together with people who understand what it is like living with a brain injury and are dedicated to helping people after the trauma.”
The event is held in March as BIS’s key event for brain injury awareness month to celebrate our clients, staff, volunteers, and partners. This is essential as every 9 seconds, someone in the United States sustains a brain injury Data from the CDC also shows that more than 168,000 Virginians are disabled as a result of a traumatic brain injury and nearly 220,000 Virginians will experience a stroke this year.
“With a spirit of hope and generosity, clients, survivors, family members, and local partners spend hundreds of hours each year making an impact on our clients’ lives through volunteerism and philanthropy,” said Denise Hyater, Executive Director at Brain Injury Services. “This evening gives us an opportunity to celebrate their efforts and honor their significant contributions.”
This year, BIS is also introducing a new award in memory of PALS volunteer, Douglas Kline, who shared his story to empower others before he passed away last March.
The Douglas Kline Empowerment Award will recognize an individual or organization that truly embodies BIS’s mission; to empower those affected by brain injury.
“Douglas wanted everyone to understand the power of connection, volunteerism, friendship and partnership,” said Michelle Thyen, Director of Community and Volunteer Engagement. “We want to honor him with the legacy of this award. “
Additionally, BIS will honor a new partner with the “Outstanding Community Partner” award.
This year’s theme “Bloom where you are planted” reflects our new mission perfectly,” added Thyen. “Our hope is to showcase how we help our clients bloom and grow in spite of their injuries, through our volunteer programs and community partnerships.”
