On Monday, September 18, at their 14th Annual Golf Tournament, Brain Injury Services honored the late Mahlon Frankhauser with its annual Bryant Cohen Empowerment Award. This award recognizes survivors that demonstrate a commitment to their recovery process, while leading and empowering others along the way. Those who receive award are individuals who have maintained a positive outlook throughout the journey of recover despite its difficulties.
Accepting on his behalf were Mahlon’s wife Joan Frankhauser and daughter Victoria. Joan shared remarks about Malon’s career and his injury. Mahlon was a successful Securities and Derivative attorney and litigator for over 40 years – a leader in the industry. In addition, he served as adjunct professor at St. John University School of Law, Catholic University Law School and Georgetown University Law Center and authored a book on Commodities Regulation. His world changed as he was hanging Christmas wreaths on the windows of their home, a 23-year tradition. He fell two stories off the ladder onto the concrete driveway and experienced a tragic traumatic brain injury. Joan shared “After numerous surgeries and months of struggles, we connected with Brain Injury Services, they were our lifeline, they gave him a reason to live a meaningful life.” Mahlon worked hard at everything he did, and immersed himself in recovery and encouraging other survivors in the program. Joan shares ‘With Brain Injury Services, he was able to live his dream of being a contributing member of society again.” Active in Speaker’s Bureau, he shared about his life after brain injury and always ended his talks with “Never, never give up. Ask God for help, but remember he expect you to do the legwork”.
Everyone in the Brain Injury Services community celebrates his spirit. We remain optimistic as we see resilient survivors taking important steps forward in their journey.
