Brain Injury Services Brain Injury Services Recognizes March as Brain Injury Awareness Month.
SPRINGFIELD, VA (March 1, 2019) — . Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is the leading cause of disability and death in children and adolescents in the U.S. according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), With over 5.3 million Americans living with a brain injury, it is essential to spread awareness and recognize the month of March as Brain Injury Awareness Month.
“BIS has been addressing this health crisis in Northern Virginia by providing programs and services to over 600 individuals and families each year who are experiencing the life-altering consequences of these injuries,” said Denise Hyater, Executive Director. “Brain injury awareness month gives us the opportunity to spread awareness, celebrate our survivors, and share resources that can help survivors of brain injury live a more fulfilling and productive life.”
This March, BIS is sharing highlighting client stories, holding events in the community to help bring attention to the issues that pertain to survivors of brain injury, and launching two new awareness campaigns:
Keep Calm and Brain On
Getting a diagnosis can be scary and a relief at the same time but it is important to remember you are not alone. Resources, support groups, and organizations are available to help you whether you are a client or caregiver. This campaign will highlight survivors that empower their fears and overcome obstacles to focus on the positive aspects of their lives.
My Injury Not Me: An injury doesn’t define who a person is: My brain injury doesn’t define me. This campaign will show that each brain injury survivor is unique by highlighting how they overcame obstacles to achieve their goals and dreams.
BIS is also holding events throughout the month at our different locations including our annual reception. The reception will be held at the Waterford in Springfield, VA on March 20th. It will celebrate the accomplishments of survivors and community members who have courageously donated their time, energy, and resources toward improving the lives of survivors.
On March 26th, BIS is holding an open house at our new Leesburg location. It will be a great opportunity to meet our new Loudoun case manager, learn about our programs, and learn more about BIS! These events are open to media outlets who want to cover Brain Injury Awareness Month.
